WEA COE Clinic Beijing Course
Greeting
Hi all, I am Taito Okamura, lead instructor of WEA COE Clinic. I am super excited to share the WEA world with Chinese top outdoor educator. WEA curriculum have been loved as US national standard since establishment in 1977 and helped to develop the professionalism in US outdoor leadership. Since I established WEA Japan in 2013, the development of professionalism in Japanese outdoor leadership is not enough to be success. Introducing and spreading WEA into China will be stimulus not only to Japan but also toward to all Asian countries.
The course will be run by active learning style but not in the field, sorry. The most of class will be run indoor or just out of the door in 北京怀柔国家登山训练基地. You will learn how to run the WEA course, teach WEA 6+1, and evaluate the student. Additionally we will share a part of WEA 6+1 through your teaching. Remember the goal of the clinic is not training your outdoor leadership skill. You must prove that your skill has already reached WEA outdoor educator level with the portfolio including your artifact for each skill component. Please read the instruction about portfolio at the bottom and refer the Clinic Manual below. Let's get start it right now.
Finally, I would like to appreciate Yanjie Zhang, director of 山海明心 to invite WEA COE Clinic. We met at WEA international conference 2020 and immediately hit off on our vision developing professionalism in Asian outdoor industry. I hope our friendship will expand to the bridge of Chinese and Japanese outdoor professionalism and spread to Asian outdoor leadership network.
COE Candidates
We have nine candidates form university and private section. To develop outdoor industry the collaboration of both section + government is essential. I am very impressed both party would learn new concept together. Not only learning WEA way but also create networking to work together for the future.

Course Design
The course will be run in indoor classroom and yard of 北京怀柔国家登山训练基地. Bold letter will be run outside. You will be expected to prepare the proper wear suiting any weather condition. Through the three day, the program will be very tight, so a little chance to expand closing time to complete the curriculum. Hope you to be flexible.

Teaching Assignment
Each student have to create lesson plan ahead and teach specific topic below with in 20 min. You have to submit lesson plan with proper format (Title, Goal, Task, Procedure, Assessment etc., see Manual) to the committee until June 27. You will be expected to plan and teach based on WEA6+1 knowledge and skill using SPEC model. While you can use basic stationary we prepare, you should prepare and take educational material you wanna use for your teaching. For more detail of SPEC and student teaching, please refer COE Clinic Manual above and supporting resources below. Don't use power point. Don't use big white board. We are outdoor educator.

About Supporting Resource:
There so many books and online information about outdoor leadership in the world. The almost is based on the some evident came from past research and theory, but unfortunately there are so many wrong information in such a resource as well. I hope you to have "good eyes" to see the accurate resource based on fact as professional outdoor leader. Your information you taught will create Chinese outdoor industry in the future. In according to searching Chinese book carefully by 山海明心 and me, there is few book to cover WEA 6 +1 in China. However you have to be evaluated your skill and knowledge based on WEA standard beyond your teaching topics. I organized some English and Chinese information to help you to ready for the clinic. If you felt you have a lack of accurate information about WEA 6+1, please access those information.
Portfolio
The portfolio is one of the biggest challenge to be COE. You have to prove how you can demonstrate, teach and evaluate WEA6+1 in professional tone. You will create document and prepare for artifacts below. Please read the module 5: COE in COE Clinic Manual carefully. Writing in Chinese is definitely fine.
Primary Documents:
・Cover Letter: Who you are? Why take COE? How use COE?(500 English words or 1200 Japanese letters)
・Resume: Professional career, training, certification and awards etc.
・Field Experience Log: 100 days or more, including field trip for 30 days or more with 3 or more over night. Day trip is less than 21 and Challenge course is less than 7 (see more detail in Manual).
・Wilderness Education Philosophy Statement: Your view, values, and insight for education in outdoor including student learning goal, your prefer teaching method and assessment. (500 English words or 1200 Japanese letters)
WEA6+1 Artifacts and Evidence(See Appendix D in Manual):
you have to create and organize your artifact for 6+1 educational components (outdoor living skill, plan&logistics, risk management, environmental integration, education, leadership and judgement) based on following categories.
・Curriculum Design and Instruction: Design and delivery of structured learning program and experience in outdoor.
・Assessment and Evaluation Tools: Assessment and evaluation tool used test, quiz, or feedback.
・Certification and Training: Certification card, certificate of completion etc.
・Additional Evidence: Degree, article, book, lector etc.
Once you completed the document, you will organize them into "Portfolio Folder" you can download below and send "office@weaj.jp" using WeTransfer or alternative proper data transfer software. DON'T put them the folder on the drive directly. You MUST down load first. Please complete and send it until June 15. Once checked by WEAJ CE reviewer, you will get feedback; 1)Pass, 2)Need additional artifact or revise. or 3)Fail (means not to attend COE Clinic) until June 20. If you are required additional artifact, you should add them and resend it until June 28.
As each candidate has unique outdoor professional career, so the portfolio should be accepted variety and diversity. You have a freedom in selecting artifacts. We would evaluate your professionalism form many types of document and media such as:
