LNTアイルランドは、アイルランドで唯一のアウトドア倫理団体です。その使命は、アイルランドのアウトドアフィールドと自然遺産に対して楽しみ方、気付き、尊重、責任について、教育、情報提供、普及することです。生物多様性、生息地、野生生物、景観（陸上と水上の両方）の自然資源は限られており、アウトドアを楽しむ人の数が増加しているため、これらは益々ダメージを受けています。これは、COVIDパンデミックと訪問者数の回復以来特に顕著になっています。調査によると、海外市場からアイルランドを訪れる約270万人の訪問者がアウトドア活動に参加しており、アイルランド人の64％がアイルランドでの休暇中に陸上のレクリエーション活動に参加しています。この理由から、アイルランドは世界で最も「自然が枯渇した」国の一つでもあり、野生動物の生息地の 85% が不適切な状況に分類されています。

Leave No Trace Ireland is Ireland’s only outdoor ethics organisation. Its mission is to educate, inform and encourage enjoyment, awareness, respect and personal responsibility for outdoor spaces and Ireland’s natural heritage. Natural resources of biodiversity, habitats, wildlife, and landscape (both on land and on water) are limited and increasingly vulnerable in the face of significant increases in the numbers of people enjoying the outdoors. This has been particularly evident since the COVID pandemic and the recovery in visitor numbers. Research shows that some 2.7 million visitors to Ireland from overseas markets take part in outdoor activities, and 64% of Irish people participated in land-based recreation activities whilst on holiday in Ireland. In this context, Ireland is also one of the most ‘nature-depleted’ countries in the world with 85% of our habitats categorised as being in an unfavourable status.
Leave No Trace Ireland fulfils its mission through a comprehensive programme of research, education, training, public awareness, advocacy and in partnering with government agencies, outdoor pursuits organisations, local authorities and private sector companies in pursuit of shared goals. This work is done under the leadership of its CEO, Maura Kiely.
Leave No Trace Ireland was established in 2008 and is headquartered in Westport, Co. Mayo. It has a core team of 9 full time and 8 part time led by Maura. It delivers its training and education programmes directly and in collaboration with outdoor pursuits organisations and a network of 750 trainers and 550 members engaged in outdoor pursuits activities.
The work of Leave No Trace Ireland is underpinned by the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace which, while shared by the Leave No Trace ethos globally, have been specially revised and adapted for Ireland under Maura’s direction. These are:

Maura has led Leave No Trace Ireland for just over ten years. In her role as CEO of Leave No Trace Ireland for the last 5 years. Maura’s leadership, focus and strategic direction has been central to building relationships with LNTI’s stakeholders across government bodies and outdoor pursuits organisations to amplify the Leave No Trace message.
She has grown Leave No Trace Ireland’s funding to €1million and increased LNTI’s team to 16 and grown its membership.
Leave No Trace Ireland’s team is critical to its delivering on its mission. They comprise a resourceful, dedicated group of individuals that share a passion for nature, the outdoors and protecting our natural heritage. Maura is currently engaged in transforming LNTI’s structures so that it is equipped in scale and skills to meet increasing demands for its work from its stakeholders and the public. Leave No Trace Ireland plays a central role in advising and helping to co-ordinate public awareness and training activities with stakeholders in pursuit of their shared goals. Leave No Trace Ireland has been a core member of Comhairle na Tuaithe – the key advisory body on the sustainable development of the outdoor recreation sector – since 2020. Maura was appointed to Comhairle by the Minister for Rural and Community Development along with being appointed to two more working groups to lead the conversation on responsible visitor behaviour on a national level. Comhairle also is working with Leave No Treace Ireland and other stakeholders on the roll out of the national outdor recreation strategy and the update of the Countryside Code in Ireland.
Working closely with the Board of Leave No Trace Ireland, Maura helps ensure that LNTI operates to the highest standards of governance and corporate oversight. The LNTI Board is made up of leaders from the outdoor industry, youth organizations, non-profit organizations and other key stakeholders that provide strategic leadership to LNTI, oversee its governance and sets its policy agenda and priorities, and all on a voluntary basis.
Maura has overseen Leave No Trace Ireland’s Activity Programme during 2023 which responded to challenges facing the outdoors. Highlights from 2023 included:
- 2024 #LoveThisPlace Public Awareness Campaign – LNTI’s keystone public information campaign run in collaboration with its partner organisations, and Roz Purcell, outdoor enthusiast and founder of The Hike Life. The campaign highlights simple actions the public should take to safeguard and care for outdoor spaces. This year’s campaign achieved very significant levels of engagement, reaching almost 5.9 million people and secured 50,000 reposts. Its core messages were repeated by three government ministers and over 100 participant organisations and individuals.

- Protect Our Dunes Campaign in August 2023 highlighting the importance of sand dunes and coastal areas as reserves of biodiversity and important habitats.
Maura’s leadership in the charities sector was recognised with a National Charity Impact award in Ireland. She is in the final year of her PhD programme in nature conservation and outdoor recreation with the University of Galway. On a personal level, Maura is deeply connected with nature and has completed multiple expeditions including white water kayaking across Europe, skiing, hiking across the world and sailing across the Atlantic. Her next expedition planned for August is an open water crossing to Clare Island from Louisburgh. Her life experiences inform Maura’s leadership approach and commitment to the principles and ethos of Leave No Trace.Coming Soon
